Why this program?

This course explores the concepts of value-added and non-value-added, or waste, by providing examples of how activities can be viewed through the lens of the patient or client. Gemba is introduced as a method for the identification of waste. The eight types of waste that can occur in the health sector are defined and described. A relevant health sector case study provides a context for the concepts taught and course learnings are reinforced through review questions at the end.

This program is aimed at health professionals starting their Lean journey including Administrative Assistants, Quality Administrators, Research/Business Analysts, Public Health Dieticians/Nutritionists, Health Policy Specialists, Registered Nurses and Physicians from organizations across the health sector including hospitals, health authorities, mental health and addictions, youth services, long term care, public and community health.

Key Information

Waste can be defined as any element of a process that adds time, effort, and cost but no value. It is estimated that more than 30% of healthcare spending does not add much value for patients, and is considered as different types of waste. Identifying wastes is the first step towards reducing them. This course explores the concepts of value-added and non value-added, or waste, by providing examples of how employee activities can be viewed through the lens of the customer or patient. Gemba is introduced as a method for the identification of waste. The eight types of waste are defined and described.
